Pattern hair loss (PHL) is a common and frustrating challenge, but modern aesthetic medicine is constantly evolving to provide more effective solutions. Current strategies often aim to promote hair follicle cellular proliferation and improve vital blood supply using a variety of methods, including medications, transplants, and tissue activators like polydeoxyribonucleotide (PDRN).
A recent clinical study explored a promising new combination to tackle this condition: pairing the 1,927-nm fractionated thulium laser with PDRN injections.
To understand the true efficacy of this new laser approach, researchers compared two different treatment methods on 16 patients diagnosed with pattern hair loss.
Group 1: Eight patients received 12 weekly sessions of 1,927-nm fractionated thulium laser treatments, followed by intra-perifollicular PDRN injections.
Group 2: Eight patients received 12 weekly sessions of traditional mesotherapy injections, also paired with PDRN injections.
When measured one week after the final treatment session, the results were highly encouraging for both groups, but the laser treatment truly stood out.
Patients treated with the thulium laser and PDRN saw their mean hair counts increase by 20.4% compared to baseline.
These same laser-treated patients experienced a remarkable 53.1% increase in mean hair thickness compared to baseline.
While the mesotherapy group also saw improvements, statistical analysis showed the thulium laser combination resulted in significantly greater improvements in hair thickness.
Beyond the superior aesthetic results in hair thickness, the study highlighted several major practical benefits of the thulium laser approach over traditional mesotherapy. The microscopic thermal zones created by the laser may provide a highly effective route for delivering PDRN and topical vitamins directly into the skin.
Here is how the two treatments compared in the clinic:
| Clinical Factor | Thulium Laser + PDRN | Mesotherapy + PDRN |
| Procedure Time | Roughly 5 minutes or less
| 10 minutes or less
|
| Patient Comfort | Well-tolerable pain
| Pain was sometimes intolerable for 50% of the patients
|
| Visible Side Effects | Transient redness, no oozing or bleeding
| Marked bleeding and oozing observed around injection sites
|
| Hair Thickness Increase | 53.1% improvement from baseline
| 16.1% improvement from baseline |
For individuals struggling with pattern hair loss, the combination of 1,927-nm fractionated thulium laser energy and PDRN injections offers a remarkable, convenient, and highly effective treatment option. By promoting optimal wound healing and transdermal delivery without the heavy discomfort or bleeding of traditional injections, this laser therapy represents a significant step forward in restoring hair density and thickness.
The 1,927-nm fractionated thulium laser creates microscopic thermal zones in the scalp. This gentle thermal interaction stimulates follicular progenitor cells and provides a highly effective transdermal route for delivering topical nutrients and tissue activators, like PDRN, directly into the skin.
The procedure is generally very comfortable and well-tolerated. In a clinical study, patients reported only well-tolerable pain and transient redness, completely avoiding the oozing or bleeding often associated with other treatments. In contrast, up to 50% of patients receiving traditional mesotherapy injections reported pain that was sometimes intolerable.
Polydeoxyribonucleotide (PDRN) is an injectable tissue activator. When paired with thulium laser treatments, PDRN helps stimulate wound healing, minimizes any potential side effects of the laser, and actively promotes the restoration and growth of hair follicles.
Clinical research shows that a combined treatment of thulium laser energy and PDRN injections results in significantly greater improvements in hair thickness. Patients treated with the laser combination saw a 53.1% increase in mean hair thickness compared to baseline, whereas the mesotherapy group saw a 16.1% increase.
The thulium laser procedure is highly convenient and fast, taking roughly 5 minutes or less to complete per session.
